Presentation

Archipel is a transdisciplinary French-speaking research community focusing on the challenges of the Anthropocene (planetary limits, systemic risks, levers for action).

In the context of current global degradations, be they environmental, ecosystemic, climatic, social or political, our human societies find themselves confronted with ever more pressing challenges, constituting what is now commonly referred to as the Anthropocene transition. These major changes, if they materialize in full, will set our societies on a course of abrupt transitions and potential collapses on a variety of scales.

Against this backdrop, a wide range of research is essential, and three areas deserve particular encouragement:

On the long-term structural dangers posed by the transgression of the planet’s biophysical limits and its impact on people’s daily lives.

  • On the interconnectedness of our society’s structural networks, their complexity, and the hyper-specialization of their components, which can propagate the slightest local or sectoral shock to the global level. This second aspect calls for a trans-disciplinary approach, unusual in current research practices.
  • On social, economic and political change, and how it can affect trajectories. This third aspect requires the integration of politics as one of the variables in the field of study.

A charter (in french), drawn up collectively and voted on by the assembly in spring 2023, sets out the objectives and values claimed by the community.
